1. What Are Categories?

Categories are broad groups used to organize posts into major topics. They help structure your blog and make it easier for visitors to find related content.

For example, a technology blog might use categories such as Smartphones, Software, and Gadgets.

2. What Are Tags?

Tags describe specific details of a post. They are optional and provide additional context beyond the category.

For example, a post under the Smartphones category could have tags like Android, Camera, or Battery Life.

3. Categories vs Tags

  • Categories are broad and hierarchical.
  • Tags are specific and non-hierarchical.
  • Categories help users understand the general theme.
  • Tags identify particular details or topics within a post.

Understanding the difference helps maintain a well-organized blog structure.

4. When to Use Categories

Use categories to create the primary structure of your blog. They should reflect the main topics you regularly write about.

  • Define 3 to 7 main categories for your site.
  • Use subcategories only when necessary.
  • Each post should usually have one category.

5. When to Use Tags

Use tags when you want to highlight specific topics or keywords that appear in your post.

  • Use tags to describe details of the post.
  • A post may have multiple tags.
  • Tags should not repeat categories.

6. Creating Categories and Tags

You can create categories and tags in two ways.

Method 1: From Posts

  • Open the post editor
  • Go to the settings sidebar
  • Select the Categories or Tags section
  • Add or select items as needed

Method 2: From the Admin Menu

  • Go to Posts in the admin menu
  • Select Categories or Tags
  • Click Add New

This method is useful for planning and organizing your taxonomy ahead of time.

7. Assigning Categories and Tags to Posts

When editing a post, use the sidebar to assign categories and tags. You can:

  • Select an existing category or create a new one
  • Add multiple tags as needed
  • Remove tags that no longer apply

Proper categorization helps users navigate your site and improves SEO structure.

8. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using too many categories
  • Assigning a post to multiple unrelated categories
  • Creating duplicate or similar tags
  • Using tags that do not add value

Keeping categories broad and tags specific creates a clean, organized content system.

9. Summary

  • Categories organize blog posts into broad topics.
  • Tags describe specific details within a post.
  • Categories are hierarchical; tags are not.
  • Use categories for structure and tags for detailed organization.
  • A well-organized taxonomy improves navigation and user experience.
